Our Story
We built RenoChecker because we got burned.
A few years back, one of us got a contractor quote for a bathroom remodel. It looked professional. The numbers felt big but plausible. There was no obvious way to tell what was fair, so we signed it. Months later — comparing notes with neighbors who had the same work done — we realized we'd overpaid by thousands. Not because the contractor was a crook, but because we had no benchmark. RenoChecker is the tool we wish we'd had that night at the kitchen table.
The Problem
Homeowners spend $20K–$80K on quotes they can't evaluate.
Contractors know exactly what their time is worth — they price jobs every week. Most homeowners hire a contractor maybe twice a decade and are guessing in the dark. That information gap is what RenoChecker closes.
How It Works
BLS wage data. 50 metro areas. Word-for-word scripts.
- We start with BLS OEWS 2024 wage data — the same dataset economists use to measure local labor markets.
- We apply a billing rate multiplier that accounts for overhead, insurance, equipment, and reasonable profit.
- We benchmark every line item on your quote against what that work actually costs in your metro area.
- When something looks high, we hand you the exact words to ask your contractor about it — no awkward phrasing required.
